SIMISOSENKOSI HLATSHWAYO “UMZULU”

Singer | Songwriter | Guitarist | Performer | Actor

Simisosenkosi Hlatshwayo, known professionally as Umzulu, is a South African singer, songwriter, guitarist, performer, and actor whose journey into music began at the age of nine. Growing up, while many children spent their time playing outside, he was drawn to the sounds of the television and radio in his home. He immersed himself in the music of legends such as Mtshengiseni, Mgqumeni, and Mjikjelwa, replaying DVDs, CDs, and cassettes repeatedly to learn every lyric and vocal nuance.

With no access to proper instruments, Umzulu’s creativity became his foundation. He built makeshift guitars from paint tins, turned broomsticks into microphones, and used everyday household items to mimic a stage environment. This resourcefulness laid the groundwork for his artistic development and deep connection to performance.

By the age of 13, his talent began to attract attention. A school music teacher noticed him quietly harmonising during class and invited him to perform at a school assembly. It was his first experience of captivating a live audience. That same year, driven by determination, he saved his lunch money for three months to afford an hour in a small backroom studio in Vika. Using a borrowed guitar, he recorded his first demo, Ngiphuphe Ngisezulwini  a raw but soulful track that hinted at his potential. A producer present during the session remarked, “You’ve got strings in your voice,” a comment that would shape his musical identity.

Inspired by those words, Umzulu began teaching himself how to play the guitar. He later received his first guitar as a birthday gift from his father and, with guidance from his friend Syabonga Hlatshwayo, continued developing his skills. He also relied on online tutorials accessed through free Wi-Fi at the local library, practicing tirelessly until he could compose chords for his own songs. Over time, the guitar became an extension of his voice and storytelling.

At 14, a pivotal moment came when he met Luvuyo Gabela at a community talent show. Their shared passion for music led to an immediate creative connection. Together, they formed a duo called IZINCEKU and began performing at taxi ranks, church youth gatherings, and local shisanyamas. Their contrasting vocal styles .Umzulu’s deep, resonant tone paired with Gabela’s bright, high-range delivery  created a distinctive sound that resonated with audiences. They recorded their first collaborative track, Madadeni Section 3, on a laptop and distributed it via Bluetooth, quickly gaining recognition within their community.

Now 23 years old, Umzulu continues to evolve as an artist, writing music that reflects real-life experiences — from absent fathers and young love to perseverance, ambition, and hope. Having completed his matric in 2020, he has committed himself fully to his craft, constantly learning and growing. For him, music is no longer just a passion — it is a purpose and a path toward a better future.
