Joburg Theatre, Hugh Masekela Foundation announce four-day tribute concert
Joburg Theatre, in partnership with the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation, will stage a four-day tribute concert in April 2026 celebrating the life and legacy of South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela.
Hugh Masekela.
The production, titled A Tribute to Hugh Masekela, will run from 9 to 12 April 2026 at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein. It brings together a line-up of established and contemporary artists performing in honour of the trumpeter widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most influential musical figures.
Masekela, known for blending jazz with African musical traditions and for his role in the country’s cultural and political history, remains a central figure in South African and global music history. The organisers say the production is intended as both a musical tribute and a reflection on his Pan-African artistic vision.
Line-up of performers
The concert series will feature a range of artists drawn from different genres and generations, including Vusi Mahlasela, Judith Sephuma, Zoe Modiga and Tresor. The programme will also include performances by Baobab Sisters and iComplete.
Vusi Mahlasela is expected to contribute his folk-influenced repertoire, while Judith Sephuma will bring her established Afro-jazz style. Zoe Modiga will reinterpret selected works from Masekela’s catalogue, and Tresor will add an Afro-pop and contemporary fusion element to the programme.
The production will be directed by James Ngcobo, with musical direction by Sydney Mavundla. According to the organisers, the arrangement places the trumpet at the centre of the musical interpretation, reflecting Masekela’s signature sound.
The theatre foyer will also form part of the experience, with displays planned to include archival imagery and themed merchandise linked to Masekela’s career.
