The track is described as a response to ongoing concerns around gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa. It was written in the context of recent protests and advocacy efforts led by Women For Change, which have called for increased awareness and action.
‘Prey’ combines elements of alternative pop with reflective songwriting, focusing on the experiences of women affected by violence and the broader social environment in which such issues persist.
Nevis said: “‘Prey’ is about recognising a reality that too many women face every day. As artists we have a responsibility to reflect the times we live in. This song is my way of standing in solidarity and reminding people that the conversation around gender-based violence cannot fade.”
The music video features imagery inspired by protest movements, including scenes of women dressed in black positioned in a symbolic setting. According to the artist’s team, the visuals are intended to reflect themes of remembrance and collective action.
The single is expected to be performed live for the first time at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival 2026, where Nevis is scheduled as a headlining act on 28 March.
The release forms part of Nevis’s ongoing work, which often blends contemporary music with social commentary.
