German Schools Music Week brings regional learners together in Joburg
Around 150 learners from German schools across Southern Africa gathered in Johannesburg for the 2026 edition of the Music Week of German Schools Abroad, held at the Deutsche Schule Johannesburg from 9 to 13 March.
The programme brought together young musicians for a week of rehearsals, collaboration and performance.
Participants travelled from Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Windhoek, including a delegation of 35 learners from Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek (DHPS), accompanied by teachers Martina Visser and Ruben Viertel.
The programme brought together young musicians for a week of rehearsals, collaboration and performance. Activities included orchestra, choir and ensemble sessions, as well as workshops led in part by musician Eddie Clayton. Organisers said the structured schedule and technical support at the host school enabled participants to focus on developing their musical skills.
In addition to rehearsals, the programme incorporated social and cultural activities, including visits to local attractions and group events aimed at encouraging interaction among learners from different schools. Participants were hosted by local families during their stay.
The week concluded with a final concert featuring combined choirs and orchestras from the participating schools. The performance presented a range of repertoire developed during the week and marked the culmination of the collaborative programme.
Organisers and participating schools described the event as an opportunity to strengthen connections between German schools in the region, while supporting both musical development and cultural exchange among learners.
