Sipho Gumede
Bio
Jazz legend, Sipho Gumede discovered music playing pennywhistle and a homemade tin guitar and largely self-taught by being heavily immersed in church harmonies and twonship jazz, that solidified his unique bass style. He later went on to form jazz groups upon his arrival to Johannesburg, namely Spirits Rejoice and Sakhile, which went on to shape South African Jazz. Gumede passed on in 2004, July after a short illness in his hometown, Durban.
His influence continues through tributes, reissues, and the musicians he inspired, ensuring his mark on the industry remains indelible.
