Makhathini and Omagugu, who are married, have been key figures in South Africa’s contemporary jazz scene for more than a decade. Both artists were born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal and began their musical partnership early in their careers.
Omagugu studied music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Tshwane University of Technology, and the University of Fort Hare, where she earned an Honours degree in Music. Makhathini completed his undergraduate studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal before obtaining his master’s and PhD degrees at Stellenbosch University.
The duo has performed at several major international and local festivals, including the Winter Jazz Fest in New York, Avo Session in Switzerland, Mam Jazz in Mauritius, the Joy of Jazz, and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. They recently returned from two European tours and earlier this year collaborated with DJ Black Coffee at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
Makhathini has received numerous international awards and was recently featured in an NPR concert in the United States. Greg Maloka of GRIZA Enterprises described him as “a rare breed whose ancestral connection through music allows safe passage for his audiences,” adding that his performances with Omagugu are “a heavenly experience.”
Tour promoter Tony Feldman said the Durban concert offers “a unique opportunity for local jazz fans to experience both South African and international talent on the same stage.”
Porter’s Love is King South African tour includes five concerts across three cities: GrandWest in Cape Town on 12 November, Durban ICC on 15 November, and Montecasino in Johannesburg from 20 to 22 November.
Tickets are available through Show Time and Ticket Master.
