
CHICAGO the Musical to open in Johannesburg in October
The international hit stage production CHICAGO will open at Montecasino’s Teatro in Johannesburg on 3 October 2025, following its Cape Town run at Artscape Theatre, which concludes on 28 September. The Johannesburg season will continue until 16 November, extended by a week due to ticket demand.
- South African artist Tankiso Mamabolo is featured as Matron “Mama” Morton.
Presented by Showtime Management in association with Barry and Fran Weissler, the production features a 23-member South African cast, an 11-piece live band and a local creative team.
The principal cast includes Kiruna-Lind Devar as Roxie Hart, Samantha Peo as Velma Kelly, Tankiso Mamabolo as Matron “Mama” Morton, Jonathan Roxmouth as Billy Flynn, Dean de Klerk as Amos Hart, and M.E. Marvey as Mary Sunshine. The show also brings together ensemble members from the 2018/2019 international tour alongside new performers.
Since opening in Cape Town on 27 August, the musical has drawn strong responses from audiences and critics. It forms part of a global legacy for CHICAGO, which has been staged in more than 525 cities across 38 countries, with over 35 000 performances and more than 34 million people having seen the production worldwide.
CHICAGO is set in 1920s Chicago and explores themes of celebrity, crime, ambition and corruption. It features well-known numbers such as All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango and Razzle Dazzle.
The production, which carries a PG10+ advisory due to strong themes and language, is one of the most awarded musicals globally, with six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy, two BAFTAs and six Academy Awards.
