Open call: Playful Obscura artist residency in Ghana
Playful Obscura invites applications from Africa-based artists working in playful media and arthouse game development for a two-week residency in Ho, Volta Region, Ghana, taking place from 15 to 27 September 2025.

This residency acknowledges the growing importance and artistic potential of playful media and arthouse games within the broader art world. With a special focus on the emerging African scene, it aims to support innovative and experimental practices that challenge traditional forms and explore the dynamic intersection of art, technology, and interactive experience.
Who should apply?
Applicants are welcome from artists based in Africa whose work explores the creative intersection of games and art. This includes:
- Game designers
- Digital artists
- Interactive installation artists
- Multidisciplinary creatives pushing the boundaries of playful and interactive media
Artists at all career stages are encouraged to apply. The organisers aim to bring together emerging and mid-career artists to foster meaningful dialogue and exchange.
Applicants should be capable of independently developing a project during the residency. Collaboration or support from the other resident or local community is welcomed, though no additional budget will be provided for this.
Residency details
- Dates: 15 to 27 September 2025
- Location: Ho, Volta Region, Ghana
- Participants: two artists
Each artist will receive:
- Dedicated living space (private or shared, clean and comfortable)
- Shared workspace for ideation and project development
- Stipend: €200 (about $230)
- Production budget: Up to €1 000 per artist
- Catering: Full provision (breakfast, lunch, dinner) for the duration
- Programme: Includes sharing sessions, peer-to-peer learning, workshops, open studio visits, and engagement with the local community
Artists will also be encouraged to draw inspiration from the cultural and environmental context of Ho.
Selection criteria
Selection will be made by a jury of project partners:
- A MAZE.
- Node Eight Foundation.
- Goethe-Institut.
The jury will consider artistic merit, alignment with the residency’s focus, and the feasibility of completing the proposed project within the two-week timeframe.
