The redesigned Spotify app for Android Auto, expected to roll out in the coming months, has been rebuilt using Google’s Car App Library for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS. The upgrade offers developers increased flexibility to create richer, more interactive media experiences for in-car platforms.
Spotify’s Jam feature allows users to collaboratively curate a playlist without the need for Bluetooth pairing. Once a host initiates a Jam session, others can join by scanning a QR code, contributing songs directly to the playlist playing in the car. With the new integration, a Jam button will now appear in the Now Playing interface on Android Auto, giving drivers and passengers the ability to easily launch and manage sessions. The interface will also show a list of participants and provide controls to remove members if needed.
In addition to the Spotify overhaul, Google confirmed that updates to YouTube Music and Amazon Music are in development, leveraging the same app framework for enhanced performance and usability across supported vehicles.
Other key updates for vehicles with Google built-in include the long-anticipated addition of Quick Share, which allows users to share content and make route adjustments in Google Maps more seamlessly. A new light mode, improved web browser support, and expanded access to video and gaming apps are also being introduced.
Google emphasised that video playback and gaming features will only be accessible when the vehicle is parked. While driving, video apps will switch to audio-only functionality to ensure safety.
These updates reflect Google’s continued push to position Android Auto as a leading smart infotainment system, offering both convenience and interactivity to modern drivers.
