
Ghana music industry mourns passing of DJ Awana
Ghana’s entertainment community is in mourning following the death of celebrated disc jockey, DJ Awana, who passed away on 6 April.

The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed, though reports suggest he had been hospitalised the week prior. According to close friends, he had reassured them of his recovery, making the news of his passing all the more devastating.
His death came as a shock to fans and figures across the industry, with tributes flooding social media following his death.
Nana Poku Ashis, manager of highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena, paid tribute to the late DJ, describing him as a pillar of Ghana’s music scene. According to Ashis, DJ Awana’s influence extended far beyond his work, serving as a source of inspiration for many emerging creatives.
Media figures such as Ohemaa Woyeje and DJ Ashmen also joined in celebrating DJ Awana’s legacy, commending his professionalism, infectious energy, and unwavering dedication to his craft over a career spanning more than two decades.
Born Samuel Nartey, DJ Awana was widely admired for his contributions to both radio and live event music. DJ Awana began his career in 2003 at Adom FM in Tema, later moving to Oman FM in 2007. He subsequently joined Hitz FM under the Multimedia Group, where he became known for his signature jingle, “3y3 Awana nie oo,” a familiar sound for many devoted listeners.
