Call for nominations: 2017 ACT Awards
The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) has announced that nominations for the 2017 ACT Awards are open. The annual awards are held in recognition and celebration of excellence within the arts, culture and creative sectors in South Africa. The awards celebration will be held on 20 October and the organisers are yet to decide on the venue.
The event awards individuals for the Lifetime Achievement Awards as well as the ImpACT Award for Young Professionals. The closing date for nominations is 30 June.
Nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Awards and the ImpACT Award for Young Professionals are open to the public for the first time. Winners of the 20th annual ACT Awards will be selected by the ACT board of trustees.
To qualify for the awards, individuals should meet the below criteria:
Lifetime Achievement Awards
- The individual made one or more outstanding contributions, or a series of significant contributions, to advance, promote and/or improve theatre, music, dance, visual art, literature and arts advocacy in South Africa.
- The individual has led or inspired the advancement of theatre, music, dance, visual art, literature and arts advocacy in South Africa.
- Posthumous nominations will not be considered.
- Nominees must be 60 years and older.
- The nominee must be a South African citizen and be a resident in South Africa.
ImpACT Award for Young Professionals
- The individual made a notable impact during the first five years of their professional career.
- Nominees must be under the age of 30.
- Nominees must be a South African citizen and be a resident in South Africa.

Since 1998, the ACT Awards have celebrated individuals and organisations that have made a significant contribution to South African cultural life. These awards honour arts professionals whose extraordinary careers have had a profound and lasting impact on arts, culture and heritage and whose lifetime achievements have contributed significantly to the enrichment of cultural life in South Africa.
Some of the previous Lifetime Achievement recipients include Miriam Makeba, Nadine Gordimer, Pieter-Dirk Uys, John Kani and Johnny Clegg. Among the ImpACT Award winners are POPArt, Benon Lutaaya, Letlhogonolo Nche, The Muffinz, Blessing Ngobeni, Bambo Sibiya, Nomfundo Xaluva, Thabo Makhetha and Jade Bowers.
The event will be hosted by Sun International and supported by the Nedbank Arts Affinity, DALRO, SAMRO, JTI and Creative Feel. A limited number of tickets will be made available.
