Ghana: Controversy surrounds GHAMRO board election

The list of elected board members, as released by the commission, includes eight composers/authors/performers and five publishers/producers. The elected officers are James Kweku Tuffour, Augustin Addison, Rex Owusu Marfo, Bice Osei Kuffour, Diana Hopeson, Oheneba Kissi, Henry Bessa Simons, Nana Kweku Duah Okyere, Benjamin Mensah, Ahmed Banda, Seth Kwaku Amponsah, Francis Boahene and Ernest Kwesi Ennin.

Court injunction issued against the elections

Prior to the elections, highlife legend Randy Nunoo and the United Concerned Members of GHAMRO (UNICOM) had approached the courts to obtain an injunction to stop the elections. According to razzonline.com, Randy Nunoo said, “Yes, we have placed an injunction on the GHAMRO elections. When we talk, they say we can’t do anything. Now we’ve placed an injunction on it. Let’s see how their bogus and fraudulent election comes on.” 

The election was, however, held in spite of the court injunction.

UNICOM had been issuing claims of lack of accountability against the Kojo Antwi-led board, and also alleged that the outgoing board had intentions to tamper with the elections. UNICOM said although royalties had been collected for and on behalf of members, the leadership had failed to account for these royalties.
