Chartmetric doubles data sources, adds Boomplay
Music analytics firm Chartmetric has doubled the data sources for its cross-platform performance (CPP) metric from eight to 16 platforms, including Africa’s leading music streaming service, Boomplay.
Chartmetrics launched CPP in 2019 as an attempt to provide a single metric that measures an artist’s performance across music-streaming services, social media platforms and other digital entities.
Other new sources include Shazam, TikTok, Twitch, Pandora and Amazon Music, as well as radio airplay, with additional playlist data from services such as Spotify, YouTube and Deezer.
Charmetric says the CPP range was increased from 500 000 to the top 1 million artists and “fan base and engagement categories were added as separate ranks to further break down an artist’s ranking.”
The company suggests that the wider range of services has allowed it to better reflect the growth of music consumption globally, and data from platforms like Boomplay will boost the CPPs of African artists.
“Over recent years, growth rates for music consumption in what were once termed ‘emerging markets’ have outpaced those in traditional markets, and music tastes and trends in these markets are now also having a global impact,” Chartmetric said.
At the time of writing, Nigerian Afrobeats musician Omah Lay, who has a top-10 Boomplay ranking, went upwards from No 4 460 with the former CPP to No 1 952 with the new CPP, a jump of about 2 500 positions.
Chartmetric has also published a snapshot of the top 50 artists according to its new CPP model, which puts Justin Bieber at the top of the list. He was followed by Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Drake, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, BTS, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift, who completed the top 10.
