Linia Wutete – Handidi Nhamo Volume 4
Artist: Linia Wutete
Album: Handidi Nhamo Volume 4
Year: 2016
Zimbabwean gospel singer and songwriter Linia Wutete has used her new album, Handidi Nhamo Volume 4, to talk about the persistent problem of poverty in the country. Wutete released the album, whose title translates as “I don’t need poverty”, at a time when Zimbabweans are facing crippling economic challenges.
By listening to the title track, one can safely assume that the singer is one of many Zimbabweans who have turned to God for answers about how to confront poverty in their daily lives. ‘Handidi Nhamo’ is a song that inspires entrepreneurship as a means to end poverty. Featuring eight tracks, the gospel offering also aims to inspire listeners to worship God.
To get her message across, Wutete uses different tempos to appeal to various listeners. ‘Ndinotenda Jesu’ (Thank You Jesus) is a rhumba beat track while ‘Mbiri Kunashe II’ (Praise God) is a reggae composition, which brings even more variety to the album.
On 'Ibva Mukona' (Get Out of the Corner), the singer urges widows to confront the challenges they face with courage. The song was likely inspired by a Human Rights Watch 2017 report titled Zimbabwe: Widows Deprived of Property Rights. The report talks about how widows are regularly evicted from their homes and land, with their property unlawfully taken by in-laws after the death of their husbands.
Other songs on the album are ‘Ndidzidzise’ (Teach Me), ‘Ndorumbidza’ (I Praise), ‘Rumbidzwai’ (Be Praised) and ‘Bvunza Mwari’ (Ask God).
For this album, Wutete worked with well-known Zimbabwean instrumentalists, among them keyboardist and drummer Michael Mahendere, bassist Carven Gumbanjera and veteran guitarist Tariro "G Fingers" Mufari.
