Ghana: Mawcom X announces joint EP with Kuvie

The five-song project will drop on 28 August and features guest artists Boj, La Meme Gang’s $pacely and Kirani AYAT. It sees its creators explore variant themes via a mix of thumping hip hop, trap, reggae and Afrobeats.
Mawcom X says Gift of God was conceived between 2017 and 2019 and inspired by difficult experiences, most notably the death of his mother. Overall, the album is pays homage to God, life and living it. The first single off the album, 'Pure', was released on 14 August while ‘Mawuli’ is expected on 21 August.
Speaking to Music In Africa about his working relationship with Kuvie, Mawcom X said: “Working with Kuvie is easy: we never have to force anything. Before music, we connect on a whole different level and we always keep it 100% when we’re in the zone. I appreciate that.”
On his part, Kuvie said: "It just happened. No forethought. We both were overcoming our personal turmoil, grief and personal differences. We found a lot in common ground during that period and it shows in the music. More the universe than us deciding if you ask me."
Kuvie added that the experience with Mawcom X was "tough but worth it, especially watching him unlearn certain things about composition and exploring his freedom to create without adhering to other people’s expectations of how he should sound."
Asked about his expectations for the EP, Kuvie said: "Mawcom X has always believed that I’m Ghana’s best producer in my era. I’ve never doubted his lyrical genius and always felt he could be more vulnerable with his music. I’m sure he’s hoping for this to be the best showcase of our best attributes and is challenging each other raise the bar in our respective crafts."
Over an 11-year career, Mawcom X has accrued acclaim as a songwriter, record producer and cultural architect. He has collaborated with top African stars including Mr Eazi, R2bees, Guilty Beatz, Skales and Brymo.
With the new EP, the musician hopes to establish himself as "one of Africa’s new generation’s thought leaders. Gift of God is more than just a body of music and after a few listens it becomes evident,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kuvie is the author of 2018’s Gruvie Vol 1 album. A Ghana Music Awards nominee, he has also scored high-profile collaborations with Sarkodie, King Promise and Pappy Kojo.
