Music Week Nigeria conference under way
Music Week Nigeria, a conference aimed at bringing together various industry stakeholders to take stock and discuss the prospects of Nigeria’s music industry, commenced on 5 August. The conference will run until 8 August.
This year, the trade event is presented virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is running under the theme, Leveraging Nigeria’s Vibrant Music and Entertainment Industry to Drive Economic Prosperity.
Convened by lawyer and Chocolate City co-founder Audu Maikori, the event will feature an array of musicians and music professionals taking part in strategic conversations and panel discussions on pertinent topics realted to the future of music in Nigeria.
On 2 August, Kennis Music founders Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye were honoured during a virtual tribute event. Hosted by Ubi Franklin, the event saw special appearances by industry stalwarts like DJ Jimmy Jatt, Sasha P, Emem Ema and 2Baba, all of whom praised Ogungbe and Adeneye as important players in their careers.
Day 1 of the conference featured the likes of Korede Bello, Ladi Donli, Blaqbonez, Abuchi Peter Ugwu, Taiye Aliyu, Joy Tongo, Ms Mark, Joey Akan, Lola Oyedele, Olive Uche, Ibukun and Audu Maikori, who spoke about music marketing, digital streaming and building a creative team.
The upcoming programme of the event will see the participation of Sarz, Mulika Sannie, Efe Omoregbe, Tega Oghenejobo, Tokumbo Komolafe and Obi Asika. The music professionals will discuss essentials like songwriting, royalty accounting, music distribution and publishing.
In recent years, Nigeria has made significant leaps on the global music front, particularly with the meteoric rise of Afrobeats. By the end of the conference, the organisers intend for participants to fully harness the new and exiting opportunities available in the music space and entertainment industry as a whole.
They also hope to facilitate a convergence point for networking and equip practitioners, policymakers and investors with valuable insights to improve the entertainment ecosystem in the country.
