SAMAs Day 2: All the winners

The subtheme for the night was #ForThaSoul and the star-studded line-up included performances from SAMA winner Judith Sephuma, who sung her hit ‘Maropeng’ alongside a contemporary dancer. She was joined on the night by Ami Faku who belted out an emotionally charged ‘Inde Lendlela’. She was supported by two instrumentalists performing from an empty outdoor venue.

Hosts Dineo Langa and Donovan Goliath were again joined by comedian Skhumba Hlophe and radio personality DJ Ankletap, who both punctuated the show with commentary. Guest celebrities included gospel star Rebecca Malope, radio personality Sentle Lehoko, radio host Carol Ofori and musician Langa Mavuso.

Prince Kaybee clinched the coveted Male Artist of the Year Award for his album Re Mmino. Bishop Benjamin Dube took the Best Contemporary Faith Music gong for Glory In His Presence. He is also set to receive the SAMA Lifetime Achievement Award this year.

Samthing Soweto walked away with the Best Afro-pop Album award for Isphithiphithi and Bongo Riot Di Dancehall Wakanda won in the Best Reggae Album cateogy for True Stories.

Lo-Ghost were triumphant in the Best Alternative Music Album category for Cult Pop, while rising star Lungisa Xhamela won the Best R&B/Soul Album Award for My Heart to Your Soul.

Ndlovu Youth Choir, which performed on the opening night, got the accolade for Best Adult Contemporary Album for Africa, while Pilani Bubu bagged the Best African Adult Contemporary Album Award for Folklore: Chapter 1.

“We would like to congratulate all the winners under this theme #ForThaSoul,” M-Net local entertainment channels director Nomsa Philiso said. “Fans from around the country are fortunate to have this talented cohort of musos gracing the airwaves and we would like to thank them for providing us with soul food music."

The third instalment of the 2020 SAMAs will run under the subtheme #ForThaStreets and will be broadcast on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) and My Muze on 4 August from 9.30pm CAT.
