Bio

Nick Pitman, a guitarist, producer, and music educator based in Durban, South Africa, has carved a dynamic path over the last decade within the city's music scene. Renowned for his ability to traverse diverse genres and push the boundaries of musical conventions, Pitman has earned recognition from both local artists and the wider South African music community.

Pitman was selected for the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band in 2016 and 2017 under the musical direction of Carlo Mombelli and Buddy Wells respectively. His musical journey took him to the Oslo Jazz Festival in Norway in 2016 with the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal Jazz Band Nyimbo Yabantu and to Cape Town in 2018, showcasing his original compositions. In 2019, he performed in Sinatra and Me, a week long showcase of Frank Sinatras music sung by world renowned British singer, Richard Shelton. In 2022 he was one of the acts which performed his original music at the renowned South African Jazz Venue, The Rainbow's, Summer Series of concerts, celebrating the club's 41st birthday. Along with these prestigious performances, he led his band in opening for Jimmy Dludlu in September of 2023.

2024 proved to be Pitman’s most iconic year in his career, with the completion of his Debut album along with a series of Album launch concerts at The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music in the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, The Chairman, in Durban and Fine Dining Restaurant and Bistro 3603 in Hillcrest, Durban, he was also apart of a two month tour to China and Taiwan where he was a guitarist for the Andrew Lloyd Weber Musical Theatre Production, “School of Rock”, organised by British Musical Theatre company, GWB. Soon after this tour, Pitman performed with the Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in the yearly Starlight Pop Opera, organised by First National Bank, where he supported the likes of Mandla Mlangweni, Thandiswa Mazwai, Khaya Mthethwa and many others. This year, he has been involved in the Musical Theatre Production, “Sunset Boulevard” with star Sarah Brightman as the leading Role of Norma Desmond, and under the Musical Supervision of Broadway acclaimed, Kristen Blodgette, the musical has toured China for 10 weeks, from Beijing to Shanghai, Wuhan and Shenzen.

Along with a busy performance schedule, Pitman completed his debut album Nick Pitman's Juicebox in 2024. The recorded album is a culmination of a Crowd-Funding campaign which Pitman began in August 2023 using the Back-A-Buddy Platform. The album comprises his original music which can be described as a Fusion of Jazz, Funk, Rock and Afrobeat. The band includes Ntokozo Nsibande on Trumpet and Horn Section Arranger, Siyalo Zulu on Trombone, Martin Sigamoney on Alto-Saxophone, Burton Naidoo on Piano and Synths, Braydon Hore on Bass Guitar and Bruce Baker on Drums. Featured artists include, Vocalist, Annalyzer (Anelisa Stuurman) from Johannesburg based band “Khoi Khoi”, Poet, Mandla Matsha, Violinist, Refiloe Olifant, Rapper, Ewok (Iain Robertson) and Saxophonist, Siya Duma.
