Bio
Kunda Nyendwa, known by her stage name "KUNDA", is a Zambian singer whose distinctive blend of Afropop, Afro-jazz, and Afro-soul has made her a powerful voice in the African music scene. Born with an innate musical talent, Kunda’s journey began in her local church choir, where she first honed her voice and developed a deep connection to the art of performance.
Her career took a significant leap forward in 2016 when she placed second in the "Airtel Trace Music Star" competition, which marked the beginning of her rise to prominence in Zambia’s music industry. After years of performing as a backing vocalist, Kunda launched her solo career in 2021, crafting a sound that fuses contemporary influences with the soulful rhythms of her Zambian heritage.
Kunda’s music has captivated audiences far and wide, with singles like "Nimakuyewa” (2022), “Touch”(2023), and “Lusaka” (2024) showcasing her remarkable vocal range and emotional depth. Each track is a testament to her versatility and her ability to blend Afropop with Afro-jazz, Afro-soul, and other genres in ways that are both fresh and deeply rooted in African culture.
In 2024, Kunda’s music and social advocacy reached new heights when she won the "Beyond Music Competition', with her track “Usiku” being featured on the Beyond Music Vol. 4 – Songs for Social Change album. The collaboration with Nigerian jazz artist Jessica Bongos and Netherlands-based producer Ridmbanger created a powerful message of social change, further solidifying Kunda’s role as an artist with a mission.
Kunda’s passion for social change extends beyond her music. In 2023, she represented Zambia at the ProProgressione Actors of Social Change Academy in Budapest, Hungary, where she was awarded the prestigious EU Youth Pass. During the academy, Kunda learned various methodologies of artivism—the fusion of art and activism—which further deepened her commitment to using her platform to create positive social impact. The experience not only expanded her artistic horizons but also strengthened her belief in the power of music to drive meaningful change.
Beyond her musical achievements, Kunda is an advocate for education, gender equality, and environmental awareness. She firmly believes that art and music can spark conversations and inspire action on global issues.
Kunda’s journey is a story of resilience, passion, and the unwavering pursuit of one’s dreams. With each performance, each note, and each cause she supports, Kunda continues to inspire and empower, leaving a lasting legacy as one of Zambia’s most exciting and socially conscious voices in music.
