SA: BET pays tribute to Lebo Mathosa
The Lebo Mathosa's biopic The Dream: The Lebo Mathosa Story will premiere on BET (DStv channel 129) tonight on the anniversary of the icon's death.
The six-part series stars reality personality Bahumi Madisakwane and actress and musician KB Motsilanyane, who portray the Boom Shaka singer as a teenager and adult respectively.
The Daveyton-born kwaito singer made a great impact on the SA music industry through her unorthodox style and daring live performances. Discovered by music producer Don Laka at the age of 17, Mathosa started her career with the popular South African band Boom Shaka in 1994 before establishing a successful solo career.
Her debut solo album Dream went gold in less than a month after its release in 2000. She went on to produce a collection of hit songs, clinching multiple awards and accolades along the way, before a fatal car accident ended her life on 23 October 2006.
She was largely influenced by and often compared to legendary singer Brenda Fassie.
"It's not an easy journey to play this character because it's beyond imagination, larger than life, and every single thing is a new experience,” KB Motsilanyane said. “Walking in Lebo's shoes is definitely one of the greatest things I have ever done."
Madisakwane added: "The fondest memory I have of Lebo Mathosa was from when I was five or six, and we went to the Rand Easter Show, a show where she and my father [Somizi Mhlongo] were performing. I remember she was this amazing powerhouse on stage and was always so maternal and protective over me and I think that is why I really want to tell her sincere, humble and emotional side."
The show starts at 9.30pm CAT.
