Bez

Bio

Bez (Emmanuel Bezhiwa Idakula) is a Nigerian singer. Although his parents are from North Central state Nasarrawa, he was born in city Jos, Plateau state. Listening to country and gospel music, Bez learned to play the guitar age 9 and sang for the church choir.

Bez counts the Beatles and Amy Winehouse as influences and uses live instruments in his performances. He continued singing when he got to university, performing at Open Mic sessions. He graduated with a degree in Information and Communications Technology. Prior to graduation he met singer Praiz, a meeting that would later yield a hit single.

His first single to find an audience was ‘Zuciya Daya’ (2009). But the collaboration with Praiz, ‘Stupid Song’ (2011), became his crossover hit. The video for the tune, composed of primary school rhymes, became the first video by an African artist to show on BET’s 106 & Parks. Both songs featured on Bez’s album ‘Super Sun’ (2011). Regular collaborator, Producer Cobhams worked on Super Sun. By the end of the year the US publication Boston Globe included it in its list of ‘World Music’s Top Albums of 2011’. The publication referred to Bez as ‘a male counterpart to that country’s [Nigeria’s] new songstresses such as Asa, Nneka and Ayo’.

Ahead of a forthcoming album, Bez released My Baby (2014) and There’s a Fire (2015), the latter is a jazzy number channelling Fela and featuring bassist Michael Olatuja and Marcie Chapa, a member of US R&B star Beyonce’s band.
