Daddo Gyan

Bio

Daddo is musician and filmmaker based in Accra Ghana. He started making music whiles studying Film at the National Film and television institute (NAFTI). He mainly created music for short film projects and performed at small events on campus. Today his music can be heard on award-winning films, and in concert venues across Ghana.

Born David Addo-Gyan to a family of musicians and Christian leaders, Daddo grew up singing in church and playing in the church band with his siblings. His father owned a recording studio where many great musicians would come to rehearse and record. The studio was eventually sold, but it meant that when Daddo eventually took an interest in songwriting and production at age 14, there was an abundance of books, old equipment and a few trained ears around to help him find his feet. Daddo studied visual arts and went on to get a diploma in computer graphics, which honed his creativity and gave him a good footing in computer based art. Daddo didn't dive into music seriously till he enroled in Film school and got compliments when playing around with sequencers in his dorm room.

In 2015, Daddo was handpicked by YomThePoet to perform in the Made in Ghana concert series which saw him perform all year long, and also get recruited for the Oxymorons (now Jive Live) art addiction series, which was curated by Ann Modey from 2016 - 2018. Also in 2016, Daddo had the opportunity to open for Efya at her "Efya and Friends" concert which led to a relationship with event giant Lumiere Interactive and consequently, Abantu Plus. Some highlights include a headline show at Accra City Hotel, SoulQuest, Abantu+ live room concert, Sabolai Radio, Chalewote, the Debut Live, Kaleidoscope, Nkabom festival, Watercooler Ringside, a series of radio and TV interviews and performances. Most notable of his accomplishments is producing soundtracks of Award Winning Films: "Xoese", "Side Chic Gang" and "Potato Potahto"(which opened at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival).

Daddo Gyan's raw-heart-no-frills style is led by a raspy singing voice and often accompanied by acoustic guitar, piano or minimalist instrumentation. Though he makes a variety of styles, Daddo's music can be described as leaning strongly towards contemporary folk and soul, mostly in english with a handful in Ghanaian Pidgin and Twi. His influences include Bob Marley, Jason Mraz, Norah Jones, Daasebre Dwamena and Osibisa.

"Daddo is not your everyday musician". - Everyday Tech, CBT

Daddo has an ear for good music and a knack for experimentation. His recording workflow, which was a unique but tedious system of back and forth takes between a smartphone and his laptop, was featured on the CBT's web series, Everyday Tech. He has released numerous singles on SoundCloud in anticipation of his Debut Album.

Daddo is still very active in the filmmaking circles. He consults for film and television production companies, teaches masterclasses and runs an online community for Post Production professionals.
