Call for applications: 2019 nAnA grants
The British Council’s new Art new Audiences (nAnA) is looking to fund 10 projects that showcase new ideas in music, design, fashion, film, dance, theatre, the creative economy, architecture, literature, visual arts or any combination of the above.
- The British Council funds various music projects in Africa. DJ Sose took part in a British Council collaborative programme in Nigeria in 2013.
This call seeks to support projects by artists, arts organisations and/or art collectives that already have, and want to build upon, cross-country collaborations and connections.
The proposed project must have at least one UK partner and at least two partners from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone.
Participants will be provided with the opportunity to create new art and showcase to new audiences in Africa and the UK.
Interested parties have until 1 July to apply. Successful applicants will be notified between 19 and 23 August, before the commencement of the programme in October.
Project eligibility
For the project to be accepted it must:
- Focus on the creation of a new piece, or a new body of art.
- Involve at least three different countries.
- Target audiences between 18 and 35 years old and engage them both online and face to face.
- Be completed within 12 months of receiving funds from the British Council.
- Be willing to submit a mid-project report and an end-of-project report will be expected to receive payment. A template will be provided for these reports.
Note that there are no restrictions on art forms and themes for the project.
Financial support
- nAnA will fund 10 new projects and applicants may request up to £30 000 ($40 000). However, experimental project proposals in the range of £5 000 to £10 000 are also welcome.
- 40% of funds will be granted upon signing a contract with the British Council and the remaining 60% will be granted upon submitting project reports.
- Projects can be match funded by other financial partners. Therefore, partnerships are encouraged.
If shortlisted, candidates will be invited to a Skype interview, which will last 45 minutes to one hour, and requested to talk through their application, focusing on the application questions, which include:
- Does this project propose the creation of exciting, innovative, and contemporary new art?
- Is this new art being created and/or showcased through strong connections between artists, arts organisations and/or art collectives across the specified countries?
- How will this new art reach new online and face-to-face audiences in sub-Saharan Africa and the UK?
- What is the size of the audiences reached?
- What are the projected figures for audience numbers and are these figures realistic?
- Are the key contributors (administrators, producers, artists, organisers, managers and the applicant) of the project 18 to 35 year olds?
- Are the projects’ audiences predominantly 18 to 35 year olds?
- Is the budget clearly broken down, well researched and realistic?
Applicants are advised to read the nAnA guidelines here before completing the online application form here.
