Africa Day: Apple Music pays tribute to African legends
Streaming service Apple Music has launched a hub that features a rich collection of music from known African artists. The hub, titled African Legends, is intended to pay tribute to various artists ahead of Africa Day on 25 May.
The African Legends hub consists of Essentials Playlists, Essentials Albums, Classic Singles, A Spotlight On and a dedicated playlist with 50 of the top African songs of all time.
“Our African Legends collection includes Fela Kuti’s funky Afrobeat, Brenda Fasssie’s vivacious Afropop, Youssou N'Dour’s thrilling mbalax and Angélique Kidjo’s richly textured world vision,” Apple Music said. “With essential albums, playlists and more, this is a hub dedicated to the continent’s greatest artists.
“Africa is home to a colourful tapestry of musical styles, from the soulful sounds of folk musician Vusi Mahlasela and the funk-Afrobeat of Nigerian William Onyeabor to Algerian singer Khaled with his pop and rai style of music.”
The Essentials Playlists feature Angélique Kidjo (Benin), Youssou N'Dour (Senegal), Salif Keita (Mali), Amadou & Mariam (Mali), Yvonne Chaka Chaka (South Africa), Mory Kanté (Guinea), Ladysmith Black Mambazo (South Africa), Rokia Traoré (Mali), King Sunny Adé (Nigeria), Thandswa Mazwai (South Africa), Simphiwe Dana (South Africa), Abdullah Ibrahim (South Africa), Tinariwen (Mali), Baba Maal (Senegal), Ali Farka Touré (Mali), Johnny Clegg (South Africa), Orchestra Baobab (Senegal), Ismaël Lô (Senegal) and Rachid Taha (Algeria).
The playlists also include late artists such as Miriam Makeba (South Africa), Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens (South Africa), Cesária Évora(Cape Verde), Lucky Dube (South Africa), Oliver Mtukudzi (Zimbabwe), Papa Wemba (DRC), Busi Mhlongo (South Africa) and Dorothy Masuka (South Africa).
Some of the albums that featured under Essentials Albums include Miss Perfumado (Cesária Évora), Kaira (Toumani Diabaté), The Magic of Miriam Makeba (Miriam Makeba), Tuku Music (Oliver Mtukudzi), Shaka Zulu (Ladysmith Black Mambazo), Seven Degrees North (King Sunny Ade), Prisoner Remastered (Lucky Dube) and Home Is Where Music Is (Hugh Masekela).
A Spotlight On contains a quintessential selection of albums by a specific musician, currently showcasing the timeless work of Youssou N’Dour, while Classic Singles offers hits such as Brenda Fassie’s ‘Vulindela’, Mory Kante’s ‘Yeke Yeke’, Miriam Makeba’s ‘Pata Pata’ and many more.
