Qwela

Bio

Raised in a traditional African background and influenced by western culture, Qwela as a band have come up with a unique fusion of African music with a Western musical approach. Their niche reaches a section of society that is not catered for by the current of digital, recycled music.

What started as a group of young musicians playing popular contemporary renditions a few years ago has become a fully-fledged live act with a following on the threshhold of a musical revolution in Kampala.

Qwela has performed at :
• Sauti za busara festival- Zanzibar
• Bayimba International festival of culture and arts- Kampala
• Kidepo Live concert Nairobi
• Coke studio Africa- Nairobi
• Blankets and Wine- Kampala,
among other performances in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda

They have performed alongside artists like
• Salif Keita (Mali)
• Waje (Nigeria)
• Eric Wainaina (Kenya)
• Amp Fiddler (Detroit)
• Nekka (Nigeria)

They have been named top live act in many national media platforms and also took the awards for best live band at the 2010 Pearl of Africa Music Awards and Olive Awards 2011

Currently Qwela hosts jam packed evening shows at Piato restaurant every week on Friday.

Discography
Qwela has two albums to their credit “Kidepo” (2008) and “Afrotopia” released in 2012.
