Munya Mataruse

Bio

Munyaradzi Mataruse is a Zimbabwean musician who was born on 22 January 1988. He attended Chiedza Primary School in Norton before going to St Joseph High School in Zaka. He is a product of the Pakare Paye Arts Centre, founded by superstar Oliver 'Tuku' Mtukudzi, where he specialised in lyrical composition, vocals and instrumental arrangement. Munya has featured at a number of festivals, including HIFA in 2007 and 2010, and shared a stage with artists such Bob Nyabinde, Victor Kunonga, Ben Mankhamba (Malawi), Eric Wainana (Kenya) and Ray Phiri (South Africa).

Currently Munya leads a six-piece band called Kazevezeve (as Munya Mataruse neKazevezeve). The band was formed in 2005 at the Pakare Paye Arts Centre. Their music is a unique blend of styles ranging from Afro-jazz, katekwe and jiti - intensely catchy Zimbabwean melodies with smooth vocals.
