DJ Akio

DJ Akio (Akio Kawahito) is a Johannesburg-based, internationally recognized DJ and creative director widely celebrated as the founder of Strictly Soul, Africa’s largest R&B event series. Blending hip-hop, R&B, afrobeats, and future sounds, he has become one of the most influential figures in South Africa's urban culture. Born in the United States and raised in Japan, Akio originally pursued a completely different path, holding a master's degree in International Relations and working at the International Criminal Court. He ultimately followed his passion for music and youth development, relocating to South Africa. 

Strictly Soul: During the Covid-19 pandemic, Akio noticed a lack of dedicated R&B spaces in the nightlife scene and started Strictly Soul. What began as small bedroom streams quickly exploded into a massive community event series, selling out shows across multiple cities and countries. The movement focuses on creating a safe, vibrant space where women feel celebrated and fans can sing and dance together. 

Nominated multiple times for "DJ of the Year" at the South African Hip Hop Awards. Has performed at major events and festivals across the US, Europe, and Asia, including SXSW, Rocking the Daisies, and Everyday People. Serves as the creative director for Kool Out Concepts, providing creative direction for global brands like Sprite and Red Bull. Has opened for legendary artists such as J. Cole, Swizz Beatz, Snoh Aalegra, and Kaytranada.
