The programme is open to practitioners in the performing arts and aims to provide first-hand experience of theatre production processes, including planning, rehearsals and live performances.
The Goethe-Institut has opened applications for its ongoing shadowing programme, offering international theatre professionals the opportunity to undertake an internship at theatres or production houses in Germany.
The programme is open to practitioners in the performing arts and aims to provide first-hand experience of theatre production processes, including planning, rehearsals and live performances.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be theatre professionals based outside Germany, aged up to 40
- Work in fields including:
- Directing, dramaturgy or stage design
- Drama, performance, children’s and youth theatre, puppet theatre or music theatre
- Choreography
- Lighting, video or technical production
Preference is given to candidates from regions including:
- Central, Southern and Eastern Europe
- Asia
- Africa
- Latin America
Programme details
Successful applicants will:
- Be placed at a theatre or production house in Germany
- Observe and engage with at least one full production process
- Attend performances at other theatres where possible
Funding coverage
The programme includes:
- A monthly allowance of €1 200 (about $1200) for accommodation and living costs
- Travel expenses to and from Germany
- Accident and health insurance
- Up to €300 for transport and admission to other theatre productions within Germany
Selection criteria
Applicants are expected to demonstrate:
- A good working knowledge of the German language to follow rehearsals and communicate professionally
- Familiarity with German theatre and dramatic literature
- A commitment to return to their home country and contribute to the local theatre sector
- Consideration of sustainable travel options, with rail travel preferred for journeys of up to seven hours or 600km
Application process
- Applications must be submitted through local Goethe-Institut offices
- Forms are available at Goethe-Instituts worldwide
- Applications should be submitted:
- At least three months before the intended start date
- At least five months in advance for programmes starting between March and August
Deadline
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year
