Irmãos Verdades
Bio
Irmãos Verdades is a renowned Angolan musical group formed in 1986, with roots in Vialonga/Valongo, Portugal, where some of its members were based during its early development. The group—comprising Alex, Gaby, Nando, and Luís Verdades—initially began their journey as dancers in other bands before transitioning into music. Their early professional career took shape when they became a backing band for Angolan artist Raúl Indipwo (formerly of Duo Ouro Negro), a period that helped shape their musical identity and stage presence.
Their music career began gaining momentum in the late 1980s and early 1990s, culminating in the release of their debut album Saudade de África in 1993, which featured the hit “Saudade de Luanda.” The album achieved widespread success across Portugal and several African countries, including Angola, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. They continued this trajectory with projects like Fusão (1997), which included the standout track “Yolanda,” and Apaixonados, an album that cemented their popularity and earned Gold status in Portugal and Platinum status in Mozambique.
Known for their distinctive blend of kizomba, zouk, romantic pop, and traditional Angolan rhythms, Irmãos Verdades have become one of the most influential groups in Lusophone African music. Their sound is characterised by smooth, sentimental melodies and themes of love, identity, and cultural connection. Over the years, they have released more than eight original albums, along with multiple compilations, producing popular songs such as “Isabella,” “Yara,” and “Amar-te Assim.”
The group has performed extensively across Europe and Africa, including in France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, and throughout the PALOP countries. Their enduring appeal and commercial success have earned them multiple Gold and Platinum records, solidifying their legacy as pioneers of African romantic music within the Portuguese-speaking world.
