University of Johannesburg launches international choral concert series across Joburg
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Choir will host an international concert series in May 2026, bringing together choirs from France, Switzerland and the United States for a programme of performances across four venues in Johannesburg.
The concerts are designed as distinct musical encounters shaped by different venues and choral traditions
The series will feature Le Choeur du Petit Conservatoire de l’Est (France), Hendricks Chapel Choir (United States), Knabenkantorei Basel (Switzerland) and Morgan State University Choir (United States), alongside the host ensemble, the UJ Choir.
According to organisers, the concerts are designed as distinct musical encounters shaped by different venues and choral traditions, with each performance reflecting a blend of cultural exchange and stylistic diversity.
The programme forms part of UJ’s broader arts and culture strategy, which aims to position the university as a platform for international artistic collaboration and engagement.
UJ Choir conductor Sizwe Mondlane said the initiative reflects the importance of cross-cultural collaboration in choral music.
“The global exchange of artforms gives us a platform to learn from each other, making collaboration essential for an ever-evolving choral landscape. We look forward to hosting these remarkable choirs and engaging in a shared passion shaped by diverse worldviews,” Mondlane said.
International line-up and venues
The series will open on 9 May 2026 with a performance by Le Choeur du Petit Conservatoire de l’Est at Melville Kruisgemeente. Hendricks Chapel Choir will perform on 13 May at Aan Die Berg NG Kerk, followed by Knabenkantorei Basel on 16 May at Fontainebleau Community Church. The series will conclude on 23 May with Morgan State University Choir at Domus Dei.
Each ensemble brings a distinct musical background. The French choir is known for its varied European repertoire and youthful vocal approach, while Hendricks Chapel Choir is rooted in American sacred and liturgical traditions. Knabenkantorei Basel, one of Europe’s longstanding boys’ choirs, is recognised for its disciplined tone and classical repertoire, and Morgan State University Choir is widely noted for its interpretations of spirituals and contemporary choral works.
UJ says the series is intended not only as a performance platform but also as a space for artistic exchange between students, professional musicians and visiting ensembles. The initiative is expected to facilitate engagement across different choral traditions while expanding access to international music in Johannesburg.
The university added that the programme reflects its broader commitment to cultural development through the arts, positioning performance as a tool for learning and collaboration within and beyond the institution.
