South African actor and DJ Clement Maosa has released a new extended play titled Lekompo Ke Nomoro Vol. 2 | Back to the Roots, marking a continued shift into music alongside his television career.
Clement Maosa.
Best known for his role as Zamokuhle Seakamela on the SABC1 soap opera Skeem Saam, Maosa has increasingly positioned himself within the Lekompo music scene, where he continues to develop his identity as a recording artist and DJ.
The EP is built around collaboration and draws on elements associated with the Lekompo genre, including percussive rhythms and traditional influences. It also incorporates live instrumentation such as guitar, saxophone and layered percussion, blending older stylistic foundations with more contemporary production techniques.
Maosa described the project as a collective effort within the genre. “This project demonstrates the power of collaboration amongst Lekompo artists… for the culture and unity,” he said.
The release features a wide range of collaborators, including Wendy Moon, Zoli White Smoke, Novex, Ice Cue, Bayor97, Slidoo Man, PLG Chanty, Vsinare and Poobington, among others. Production credits include Ice Cue, Bayor97, Novex, Primo ZA, REAL K MFANAKOTA, BL Zero, Omega, MooDee, Vida-Soul and SmeezyOn The Beat.
The focus track, ‘Ke Bakgotse (Mpepu)’, is one of the central pieces on the project and reflects themes linked to heritage, storytelling and rhythm-driven musical traditions associated with Lekompo.
The EP is framed around revisiting and reinterpreting earlier forms of the genre, with an emphasis on maintaining cultural roots while exploring broader sonic direction.
Maosa, who studied law at the University of Limpopo before pursuing acting, has expanded his creative work in recent years through both performance and music. He continues to balance his entertainment career while contributing to the growing visibility of the Lekompo sound.
