Black Motion
Bio
Formed in 2010 in Soshanguve, Gauteng, Black Motion have become one of South Africa’s most influential Afro-house exports. Renowned for fusing electronic production with live percussion, the group built its identity on tribal drum arrangements, kwaito-rooted rhythms and spiritually resonant performances that bridge club culture with indigenous musical traditions.
Originally comprised of Bongani “Murdah Bongz” Mohosana and Thabo “Smol” Mabogwane, the outfit entered a new chapter in 2022. The current formation sees Smol joined by producer Kabelo “Problem Child Ten83” Koma, continuing the duo’s legacy while refining its sonic direction. Their contemporary sound remains anchored in percussive intensity, textured house grooves and melodic motifs inspired by Maskandi and broader African heritage.
Black Motion’s catalogue includes the critically acclaimed The Healers: The Last Chapter (2020), which won Best Dance Album at the 27th South African Music Awards, and Rebirth of the Dru (2023), both reinforcing their reputation for musical depth and cultural storytelling. In 2025, they released The Cradle of Art, a project that earned three nominations at the 31st South African Music Awards (SAMA31): Best Dance Album, Best Engineered Album and Best Produced Album — affirming their continued technical and creative excellence.
Beyond recorded output, Black Motion remain cultural conveners. In September 2025, they hosted the Friends of Black Motion (FOBM) safari experience at the Lion & Safari Park, further demonstrating their influence within South Africa’s live dance ecosystem. Earlier that year, they released the anthem Khululeka, a liberation-themed single that resonated widely across dance floors and digital platforms.
With a career defined by innovation, consistency and pan-African identity, Black Motion continue to shape the evolution of Afro-house on both local and global stages.
