Esther Konkara

Bio

Esther Konkara, widely known by her stage name Country Gal, is a groundbreaking Kenyan country and gospel music artist known for blending heartfelt storytelling with rich musical tradition. She stands out as one of Kenya’s pioneering female performers in a genre—country music—that is relatively rare on the African continent.

Born Esther Waturi in Ndeiya, Kiambu County, Kenya, she grew up in a rural setting where music and faith played a central role in her life. Influenced early on by American country legends such as Jim Reeves, Skeeter Davis, and Dolly Parton, Konkara developed a deep appreciation for country music’s narrative style and emotional honesty. Konkara’s stage name is inspired by the Biblical concept of being “more than conquerors,” which she adapted into a name that reflects both her spiritual foundation and her Kikuyu heritage.

She began singing in church and at school events, but her professional music journey took off in 2013 with her debut gospel album Turi Ahothani—a project that showcased her vocal talent and included country-flavored tracks.

Over the years, Esther Konkara has released multiple gospel albums and a number of country singles that resonate with themes of faith, love, and life. She plays the rhythm guitar and has performed at festivals and events across Africa, helping to grow the awareness and appreciation of country music in Kenya and beyond. In addition to her recordings, Konkara has helped foster a wider community for country music artists and fans through initiatives like the Country Music Africa Facebook group, which brings together musicians and listeners across the continent. Her songs—including beloved gospel pieces sung in the Kikuyu language such as “Munyamaruri” and “Undu Ucio”—reflect her cultural roots and spiritual perspective, earning her respect in both the gospel and country music scenes.
