The festival coincides with Mother’s Day celebrations and is positioned as a family-oriented cultural gathering. The event focuses on Maskandi, a genre rooted in Zulu folk traditions and recognised for its narrative songwriting, rhythmic guitar patterns and expressive vocal delivery. Originating in rural communities, Maskandi has developed into a prominent national genre that reflects themes of identity, heritage and daily life, with growing appeal across age groups.
The festival programme features performances by established Maskandi artists, including Khuzani, Umafikizolo, Menzi, Limit Nala, Thandeka Radebe and Inkosi Yamagcokama. The line-up reflects a range of approaches within the genre, combining traditional elements with contemporary interpretations.
Organisers describe the event as a platform for celebrating cultural heritage and community through live music. In addition to performances, the festival is intended to provide a shared space for families and audiences to engage with Maskandi as both a musical form and a cultural practice.
Tickets for Maskandi Fest Johannesburg are available through the official ticketing platform.
