Cotton Fest

Cotton Fest was a landmark South African music and culture festival founded in 2019 by the late rapper and cultural icon Rikhado “Riky Rick” Makhado. Originating in Johannesburg’s Newtown precinct, the festival quickly became a vibrant annual celebration of youth creativity, musical diversity, and cultural expression, blending live performances, fashion, art, lifestyle and community energy into one of the country’s most anticipated cultural events. 

At its core, Cotton Fest was conceived as a multi‑genre platform that brought together South Africa’s hottest sounds, from hip hop and amapiano to house, R&B, trap and gqom, showcasing both established stars and emerging talent. The festival also embraced street fashion, visual art, skate culture and food culture, turning each edition into a dynamic space where music and lifestyle intersected and young creatives could shine.

Over its seven‑year run, Cotton Fest became more than an event, it was a movement rooted in community and self‑expression, reflecting Riky Rick’s ethos of empowerment, inclusivity and cultural pride. The festival’s name and spirit were tied to his lifestyle anthem “Sidlukotini,” which celebrated individuality, confidence and personal style. 

In 2025, the festival expanded its impact by launching the Cotton Fest Creative Programme, focused on year‑round opportunities for young creatives, including mentorships, bursaries, workshops and collaborative spaces that extended the festival’s mission beyond its annual showcase. 

In December 2025, organisers announced that Cotton Fest would conclude under its existing structure after more than seven years of shaping South Africa’s cultural landscape, a decision driven by differences in vision among stakeholders. Despite this, the festival’s legacy as a cultural touchstone and youth‑driven platform for creativity remains strong, with pathways open for its spirit to continue in new forms through ongoing creative initiatives.
