Bio
Yung Swiss (born Steve Dang on 29 May 1994) is a Cameroonian-born South African rapper, singer, songwriter and performer based in Rosettenville, Johannesburg. Known for his melodic fusion of hip-hop and R&B, he has become one of the standout modern voices in South Africa’s urban music scene.
Yung Swiss first broke into the mainstream in 2015 when he released the single “I Love It” featuring South African rapper Reason. The track debuted on youth radio station YFM and its music video premiered on MTV Base Africa, helping introduce Swiss to a national audience. His momentum continued with the single “David Genaro,” inspired by actor Jamie Bartlett’s iconic villain role on the television series Rhythm City. The song quickly became popular, earning him recognition for his distinctive sound and storytelling style.
His biggest breakthrough came with his chorus contribution to DJ Speedsta’s hit single “Mayo.” The record dominated South African radio, becoming the most-played song for 12 consecutive weeks and reaching #1 on Nigeria’s Beat 99 FM African Chart. “Mayo” later achieved Gold certification, confirming Swiss as a rising hitmaker in the region.
In 2016, Yung Swiss continued his climb with the release of “The High,” which reached #1 on YFM’s Hot 99 Hip-Hop Chart and #1 on 5FM’s The Stir Up. That same year he released the remix of “David Genaro,” which became the most downloaded song of the week on Slikour OnLife. He also dropped the single “Locked Up” featuring Cameroonian star Stanley Enow, a cross-border collaboration that drew praise for expanding his international reach early in his career.
Later in 2016, Swiss released his debut EP Bottom Baby, a project rooted in his personal experiences and the challenges he faced navigating the music industry. The EP included standout tracks such as “The High,” “Jungle” (featuring K.O), “Where the Work At” (featuring Nadia Nakai), and “Locked Up.” The project cemented his reputation as a versatile artist able to switch between smooth melodies and sharp rap delivery.
Yung Swiss has also collaborated with artists including Ricky Tyler and Astryd Brown, helping shape the evolving sound of South African hip-hop. Known for his introspective lyrics, melodic hooks and cross-cultural identity, he continues to build a legacy as one of the unique voices bridging African and global urban music styles.
