Kokoroko announced as first act for MTN Bushfire 2026
London-based jazz and Afrobeat collective Kokoroko has been announced as the first music act for the 19th edition of MTN Bushfire, set to take place at House On Fire in the Malkerns Valley, eSwatini from 29 to 31 May 2026.

The announcement marks the initial line-up reveal for the festival, with organisers indicating that additional artists will be unveiled in January 2026. Kokoroko’s inclusion signals the festival’s continued focus on global and pan-African musical influences.
Formed in London, Kokoroko is known for blending jazz with highlife, Afrobeat, soul and other black diasporic sounds. The ensemble has been associated with the UK jazz renaissance and gained wider international attention following the release of its debut album, Could We Be More, in 2022. The group has since performed at sold-out shows across Europe, Australia and North America.
In October 2025, Kokoroko featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk series, further expanding its global profile. British media outlets including The Guardian, The Telegraph and the Financial Times have previously highlighted the group, while its work has also appeared in CRACK Magazine. Their most recent album, Tuff Times Never Last, released in July 2025, includes tracks such as ‘Sweetie’, which draws on boogie, brass and soul influences.
Kokoroko’s music draws from a range of traditions, including West African disco, lovers rock, neo-soul and Brit-funk, often emphasising collective movement and emotional connection. The group has described its approach as rooted in shared cultural heritage and collaboration among members of the African diaspora.
MTN Bushfire, one of southern Africa’s longest-running festivals, is known for its emphasis on music, arts and social impact. The event regularly features artists from across Africa and beyond, alongside programmes that support cultural exchange and community development.
Ticket sales for the 2026 edition are already reported to be strong. Organisers said more than 70% of tickets had been sold since sales opened in October 2025, prompting the introduction of a Phase 4 ticket tier. In previous years, the festival has sold out at least two months in advance.
Further details on the MTN Bushfire 2026 programme are expected in the coming months. Tickets and camping passes are available via the festival’s official website.
