Mozambique: Assa Matusse shares new single TEKA NDZINGU
Mozambican singer and songwriter Assa Matusse has released a new single titled ‘TEKA NDZINGU’, an Afropop track exploring themes of resilience, emotional struggle and recovery.
Assa Matusse.
Written and performed by Matusse, ‘TEKA NDZINGU’ draws inspiration from a cultural encounter during her time in South Africa. The track reflects experiences of chaos, misfortune and personal vulnerability, while emphasising endurance and hope in difficult circumstances. Sung in English and Portuguese, the song blends personal storytelling with themes that resonate broadly with listeners facing adversity.
Musically, the track combines elements of world music and Afropop, continuing Matusse’s approach of merging traditional African influences with contemporary global sounds. The release adds to her growing catalogue of work rooted in emotional expression and cross-cultural musical exploration.
Assa Matusse, who is based in Paris, was born and raised in the Mavalane neighbourhood of Maputo, Mozambique. She grew up in a family of five siblings, with early musical influences shaped by her father’s singing and guitar playing during family gatherings. Her work is strongly informed by Mozambican traditional rhythms such as Marrabenta, Xigubo, Mutimba and Tufo, which she fuses with pop, jazz and electronic elements.
