BlaQ Diamond
Bio
BlaQ Diamond is a South African Afro-Pop group from Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal. The group consists of singers/songwriters Sphelele Dunywa (Danya Devs) and Ndumiso Mdletshe (Ndu Browns). Both artists grew up in the same area. They met in 2010 on a school trip where both participated in a music cypher in the school bus. Their shared musical taste and talents ignited a friendship and partnership which resulted in the birth of Blaq Diamond. They started performing at school events and local gatherings, earning attention and admiration from their community.
The duo made the decision to relocate to Johannesburg in pursuit of their music dreams. Their start wasn't easy, but they eventually got signed to Ambitouz Entertainment, a record label known for signing big artists like Emtee. In 2017, they released their debut album Inqola. The project was highly successful. The fusion of Afro-soul and maskandi music with modern-day sounds made the album popular amongst the youth. Despite separating from Ambitiouz Entertainment in 2019, they have since gone on to release two more albums and multiple singles.
BlaQ Diamond has won and/or been nominated for numerous awards, including a South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Recording and an MTV Africa Music Award for Best Group.
