Sekamotho
Bio
Phomolo Sekamotho—universally known as "Flex" (of He & I)—is not just an artist; he is a linguistic architect bridging ancient African rhythms with the modern pulse of spoken word. Hailing from Thabong, South Africa, Flex is the genre-defying maestro who successfully built a house where poetry and music don't just coexist, they fuse into a singular, captivating force.
As the frontman for the alternative world music collective He & I, Flex orchestrates what he terms "poetry in music." His instrument of choice? A seamless combination of the evocative, traditional mbira and the futuristic control of the Ableton Push. This unique soundscape provides the perfect, textured backdrop for his powerful spoken word, which centers on preserving African narratives and traditional storytelling in a contemporary, global sound.
Flex has proven that impactful South African artistry knows no borders. His craft has taken the distinctive sound of -"He & I"- across Southern Africa to international stages in New York, Stockholm, and Washington D.C. In 2015, he made waves touring the USA, performing and running writing workshops, championing the "Azania to DC" banner to create platforms for young artists.
Beyond the stage, Flex is deeply invested in the creative community, notably as a co-founder of Hear My Voice, a non-profit dedicated to developing and showcasing young spoken-word artists. His debut album, -"Peace is of a Struggle"- (2020), cemented his reputation as a visionary who uses music and poetry to transcend time and space, proving that when Flex speaks, the whole continent, and the world, listens.
