The Recording Academy

Bio

The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), widely recognized as The Recording Academy, is a leading American institution representing musicians, producers, engineers, and a broad community of music professionals. The organisation is best known as the body behind the Grammy Awards, one of the world’s most influential honours celebrating artistic excellence and achievement across the global music industry.

Beyond the Grammys, The Recording Academy plays a pivotal role in music preservation, education, and artist welfare. It is a founding partner of the Grammy Museum, an independent non-profit dedicated to documenting, preserving, and interpreting music’s cultural and historical impact. The Academy also established MusiCares, a philanthropic arm offering critical support, health services, and emergency assistance to individuals working in music.

Advocacy is another cornerstone of the Academy’s work. Through its dedicated policy team, the organisation champions the rights and interests of music creators at local, state, and national levels, ensuring fair treatment, protection of intellectual property, and the strengthening of the creative economy.

The Academy’s roots trace back to the early 1950s, when the organizers of the Hollywood Walk of Fame sought guidance from prominent recording industry leaders to identify musicians deserving of recognition. This collaboration laid the foundation for what would become The Recording Academy, an institution committed to uplifting and honouring the people behind the music.
