Bio

Born Siyabonga Nene on 7 April 1986 in Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal, Big Zulu is one of South Africa’s most influential figures in hip hop and contemporary Zulu music. His career reflects a deep respect for cultural heritage while embracing the evolving rhythms of urban music.

Before entering the music industry, Big Zulu works as a taxi driver, an experience that shapes the grounded perspective and authenticity found in his lyrics. He begins writing and performing music in 2009, and his breakthrough comes after winning the Red Bull Back to the City competition in 2013. His debut single ‘Donsa Nkabi’ in 2016 introduces his bold lyrical style and marks the beginning of his rise in the South African music scene.

In 2019 Big Zulu released his second studio album Ungqongqoshe Wongqongqoshe. The project was certified Gold and earned a nomination for Best Hip Hop Album at the South African Hip Hop Awards. His 2020 hit ‘Mali Eningi’ featuring Riky Rick and Intaba Yase Dubai becomes a national anthem, achieving double platinum status and securing his place as a household name.

His third studio album Ichwane Lenyoka (2021) debuted at Number 1 and demonstrates his ability to merge Zulu traditional music with modern hip hop sounds. The project reflects his ongoing commitment to preserving Zulu identity through contemporary expression.

In 2019, Big Zulu established Inkabi Records, a label dedicated to nurturing emerging talent including Mduduzi Ncube, Lwah Ndlunkulu and Siya Ntuli. The label became known for its focus on storytelling, heritage and community upliftment, mirroring Big Zulu’s own artistic vision.

At the 2021 South African Hip Hop Awards, Big Zulu wins seven awards from ten nominations, affirming his status as a defining figure in the genre. His music blends vivid storytelling, rhythmic poetry and pride in his Zulu roots, resonating with audiences across diverse backgrounds.

Big Zulu continues to expand his influence as both an artist and cultural ambassador. His work celebrates identity, perseverance and creativity, positioning him as a leading voice in South Africa’s evolving musical landscape.
