ACT launches free mental health counselling for SA artists
The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT), in partnership with Humanitas Counselling, has announced the national rollout of its free mental health counselling services for artists across South Africa.
ACT CEO Jessica Denyschen.
All artists, regardless of their affiliation with ACT, can access the service online at here.
The initiative marks a significant expansion of ACT’s original mental health programme, which previously supported only alumni and strategic partners. The move responds to a growing recognition of the mental health challenges faced by creatives and the urgent need for accessible support.
“Artists often deal with complex emotional demands, from performance anxiety to career instability,” ACT CEO Jessica Denyschen said. “As someone who has personally experienced depression, I know how critical access to mental health care is. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.”
The counselling will be delivered by trained professionals from Humanitas, offering support for issues including stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout. The sessions are free and confidential.
“Together with ACT, we are creating a space where artists can thrive both creatively and emotionally,” Humanitas lecturer and specialist, Armand Prinsloo said. “Our shared goal is to foster resilience and well-being across South Africa’s creative sector.”
Artists in need of support can visit the ACT counselling portal to book a session or find out more. Enquiries can be directed at: info@act.org.za.
