Bio
Sebede is a visionary cultural creative, musician, spoken word artist, and fashion designer who has been weaving together the rich traditions and heritage of Zimbabwean culture into his art since a young age. With roots in Mutare, Manicaland, Sebede's music is greatly inspired by the Ndau and Manyika cultures, and seeks to educate, entertain, while preserving and promoting Zimbabwean culture.
The Ndau people, with origins in southern Africa, particularly in Mozambique and Zimbabwe, have a distinct cultural identity shaped by their history and interactions with neighboring groups. In Zimbabwe, they are primarily found in the eastern parts of the country. The Manyika people, on the other hand, hail from eastern Zimbabwe, specifically the Manicaland province, and have a rich cultural heritage known for their traditional practices, music, and crafts. Their cultural practices, such as traditional music, dance, and storytelling, continue to play an important role in their identity and community life. Sebede's music reflects this storytelling tradition, incorporating folkloric elements that bring to life the rich narratives and myths of his cultural heritage.
Manicaland, known for its breathtaking natural beauty, is home to notable landmarks such as Mutarazi Falls, the scenic Nyanga National Park, and the Vumba Mountains.
Growing up, Sebede was a member of his primary school's traditional dance team, where he played hand-played drums for traditional rhythms like Mhande. His frequent visits to rural areas of Mutare, where he learned the Manyika and Ndau dialects, had a lasting impact on his music and cultural identity.
Sebede's unique blend of percussive afrobeats and spoken word has earned him numerous award nominations and accolades. His music predominantly features the Ndau and Manyika dialects, as well as chiJindwi, a combination of both. He pursued his artistry talent after completing A-levels and immediately won the 1st national prize for AIDS awareness through his powerful poem "Unye Kupe," a government initiative.
As a prolific percussionist of note, Sebede has worked with a majority of artists in Zimbabwe and beyond, laying percussion in their music. His percussion solo with the Cape Town band Afrimentz won a prize during the Cape Town Big Band competitions.
Known for his electrifying stage presence, Sebede's live performances capture the raw energy and emotion of his music. Sebede's soulful spoken word echoes the timeless knowledge and wisdom of the ancients. With an unparalleled electric stage presence, he commands the audience's attention, delivering performances that are both captivating and unforgettable.
Sebede has released two albums, "Izwa/Listen" and "Hupenyu/Life," and has participated in numerous compilation projects and singles. His popular song "Chipohwiro" won a National Arts Merit Award for Outstanding Video of the Year in 2005. He later collaborated with the late, legendary Dr. Oliver Mtukudzi on a remix of the same song, further solidifying his reputation as a talented artist.
In addition to his music, Sebede is also a talented fashion designer and beadwork artist. His fashion brand, Torn n Tattered, showcases his creativity through stunning beaded necklaces, bracelets, and other accessories that reflect the vibrant colors and patterns...
