Zim Culture Week is here

The weeklong programme, which takes place concurrently in Zimbabwe's 10 provinces, will run under the theme Culture: A Tool for Building Communities from 19 to 25 May.

Culture Week features music, traditional dance, contemporary art, craft fairs and praise poetry. It aims to fulfil the 2005 Convention which seeks to protect and promote Zimbabwean cultural diversity and expression.

Artists performing include gospel singer Tholakele Ndlovu, Clement Magwaza, dance groups Howmine Ben Arinoti and Inqama Yophondo as well as poet Lerato Nqindi Ndlovu. Japanese music group Iyco & Kaka Furaha will also perform at the event as part of a cultural exchange programme between the two countries.

“Culture Week will be punctuated with varied activities that express the cultural heritage of humanity, augmented and transmitted through different cultural expressions by using diverse modes of creation,” NACZ acting communications and marketing manager Catherine Mthombeni said.

“This year’s theme signifies identity and a true sense of belonging. In commemorating this day countries are encouraged to celebrate the uniqueness of diverse cultures found in them as part of world culture. In addition, this day is intended to provide an opportunity for the flaunting of various cultural heritages that need to be preserved for posterity.”

Culture Week has also been designed to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between artists and cultural players form Zimbabwe and abroad.
