Monique Bingham

Bio

Monique Bingham, a luminary in çmusic for over two decades, has left an indelible mark on the genre. Her journey commenced in 1995 as the frontwoman of the "acid jazz" ensemble Abstract Truth, whose debut single "Get Another Plan" garnered international acclaim under Gilles Peterson's label "Talkin Loud." The subsequent release, "We Had a Thing," emerged as a soulful house classic due to the enchanting remix by German producer Matthias Heilbronn and its inclusion in DJ Fresh's "House Flava" compilation.

Bingham's gift for meticulously crafted lyrics and distinctive melodies resonated deeply within the house music scene. She captivated influential DJs and producers such as Kerri Chandler, Jellybean Benitez, Karizma, and Ralf Gum. In 2011, Bingham ventured into self-production with her single "You.Me.World," released under her own label, Bigga Sounds. This marked a pivotal moment as she also made her inaugural performance in South Africa at the Capetown International Jazz Festival.

While house music remained underground in the United States, Europe, and Asia, Bingham's influence soared within South Africa's burgeoning scene. Her collaboration with Ralf Gum in 2012 on "Take Me To My Love" became a standout hit, solidifying her crossover success. A monumental milestone transpired in 2013 when she became the first non-South African artist to grace the stage at the Metro FM Awards, captivating a viewership of over 10 million.

Bingham's alliance with jazz icon Hugh Masekela birthed "With her Hand," establishing her as a prominent fixture on Southern African festival stages. Celebrating two decades in the industry, she unveiled the album "Best of the Last/Anthology:1995-2015," featuring remarkable collaborations with the likes of Louie Vega, Todd Terry, and Black Coffee. Her partnership with Black Coffee on "Deep in the Bottom (of Africa)" underscored her place in the Mzansi music revolution.

Hailing from the New York City underground, Monique Bingham remains an enduring and captivating artist, poised for a future brimming with creativity and innovation. As she reflects on her journey, she asserts, "After 20 years of making music, I almost feel like I’m just getting started. I have so much more to say, and in some ways, I’m more excited now than I was back in '95. The future is wide open."
