Call for applications: University of Johannesburg Arts and Culture internship opportunities
University of Johannesburg (UJ) is inviting applications for internships funded by Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA).

The programme will be administered by UJ Arts & Culture, a division of the Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture. UJ Arts & Culture will host 14 interns who will receive mentoring and participate in professional development programmes in their respective fields. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of R5 000. The following internships are open for applications:
- Sound technician – one
- Performing arts administration – one
- Copywriting – two
- Sales/marketing – one
- Multimedia design – two
- Gallery assistant – two
- Hospitality – five
South African citizens who have recently graduated and have not previously participated in a CATHSSETA internship are eligible to apply. Internships will commence from 1 November 2023 and will run for a period of 12 months at the UJ Arts Centre on the University’s Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park.
Internship descriptions are detailed below:
Performing arts administration internship
The intern will be mentored on administrative functions and systems related to the internal UJ Arts & Culture programme as well as project planning and implementation. The internship’s aim is to develop administrative skills, specifically computer literacy, planning and coordination skills, communication skills, creative thinking, innovation and good work ethics.
Minimum requirements
- Diploma or degree or above relevant qualification in performing arts.
Sound technician internship
The intern will be mentored on technical knowledge, including assembling, operating and maintaining the technical equipment used to record, amplify, enhance, mix or reproduce sound. The aim of the internship is to develop strong balanced hearing ability, a technical knowledge of electricity and electronics, knowledge of the capabilities of different types of sound equipment, attention to detail, understand health and safety requirements, good communication, creative thinking, innovation, planning and organising skills and good work ethics.
Minimum requirements
- Diploma, degree or above relevant qualification in sound technology.
Copywriting internship
The intern will be instructed in writing copy for social media campaigns, advertisements, media statements, magazine articles and online content. The purpose of the internship is to develop computer literacy, writing skills, creative thinking, innovation, planning, organising and good work ethics.
Minimum requirements
- Diploma, degree or relevant qualification in journalism/copywriting.
Sales/marketing internship
The intern will be mentored on sales and marketing strategies, including contributing information, ideas and research to the development of marketing strategies, the tracking of sales data, and the attainment of quotas or sales team goals. In addition, they will analyse trends, data, demographics, pricing strategies and any other information that may enhance marketing and sales performance. The aim of the internship is to improve computer literacy, writing skills, creative thinking, innovation, planning and organising skills, and work ethic.
Minimum requirements
- Diploma, degree or above relevant qualification in the areas of sales and marketing.
Multimedia internship
The intern will be guided through the process of animating content and images for social media, advertising and archiving. They will also record and edit interviews, as well as compile showreels for advertising purposes. The internship aims to improve computer literacy, editing and filming abilities, animating content, creative thinking, innovation, planning and organising abilities and work ethics.
Minimum requirements
- Diploma, degree or above relevant qualification in multimedia.
Art gallery internship
The Intern will be mentored in administrative functions of an art gallery environment, such as guest relations, curatorial affairs, collections management, events and gallery management. The internship’s aim is to develop administrative skills relevant to an art gallery environment, as well as computer literacy, planning and coordination skills, communication skills, creative thinking, innovation, and good work ethics.
Minimum requirements
- Diploma, degree or above relevant qualification in fine art, design and studio practice.
Hospitality internship
The intern will be mentored in front-of-house duties, including work in venues, bars, and coffee shops. The internship aims to develop event planning and coordination, computer literacy, communication, creative thinking, innovation and good work ethics. Hospitality interns will manage emails, respond to inquiries, and provide relevant information to stakeholders. They will work collaboratively with various departments, including marketing, operations, and guest services, participating in team meetings and providing input for continuous improvement. The internship provides valuable experience in team collaboration and contributes to the success of the organisation.
Minimum requirements
- Diploma, degree or above relevant qualification in hospitality management.
