Bio
Join Bands, Not Gangs is a registered non-profit from Cape Town, South Africa, that uses music as a means to fight gangsterism in at-risk neighbourhoods.
Founded in 2018 by Berklee College of Music graduate Karien de Waal, the organization aims to prove our hypothesis - that if a small percentage of the Youth in a neighbourhood can become actively involved in constructive activities like music, we can help reduce gangsterism and therefore reduce crime.
We also hope to find and develop young talent across the Western Province in South Africa and release a new sound for South Africa.
Join Bands Not Gangs is currently working on a full length feature documentary, in partnership with production company 'Virgin Snow Pty. Ltd' in order to tell the story of the last 7 years in the community of Scottsdene in Kraaifontein. The documentary is set for release end of 2026.
