Imbewu Marimba Ensemble


Imbewu Marimba Ensemble is a music group from South Africa. Led and founded by Mzubanzi Charles Tema also known as Banzi ,currently the chairman of Marimba All Stars Project (M.A.S.P.) as well as an artistic director for Langa Arts Association (LAA).Director of Imbewu Marimba Community Company. Started musical performances in 1983 as Amajingqi musical group and shared the stage with the likes of Sakhile, Bayethe and Manu Dibango(Lion of Cameroon) . In 1987 toured the U.S, Canada and Norway. This resulted in collaboration named Obenda with a well-known Norwegian vocalist by the name of Bjorn Eidsvag.
As sn attendee of a two year course in jazz studies conducted by Music for People`s Power (M.A.P.P.) based at Joseph Stone Auditorium in the Western Cape Banzi re-arranged Dave Brubeck's Take Five for the first time played on marimbas. Imbewu has been teaching music to street children in shelters located in Sea Point, Heideveld, Manneburg also facilitated workshops with students at Norwegian schools and around Europe.
With the late Duke Ngcukana and also his late brother Ezra founded the Chorimba Concept where we fused jazz with marimbas and a choir from Langa known as Langa Adult Choir under the baton of the Duke Ngcukana and his brother Ezra. In 2010 directed a musical drama called Ibhekil`evuzayo which ran for a sold out season at Artscape and the Grahamstown Festival. Produced a Carols under African Skies which played to a sold out audience at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre. Recently with produced a Marimba Xplosion '18 and 19'. With the support from Siyabona Africa manage to break the world record for the largest marimba ensemble on the 9th of August 2018 putting the company in the GUINNESS WORLD.
