SA: Watch Goethe-Institut Library Jams ft. The Charles Géne Suite
Live music fans can now watch Goethe-Institut South Africa’s video recording of local hip hop collective The Charles Géne Suite. The performance is part of the German cultural organisation’s Library Jams.
The Library Jams project is a partnership between Goethe-Institut and Power FM 98.7. It seeks to create performing and income-generating opportunities for artists in a safe environment while simultaneously producing fresh digital content. The initiative began amid the COVID-19 lockdown in South Africa last year.
Other artists who have benefited from this initiative include local singer Zoë Modiga and South Africa-based amapiano singer Sha Sha.
“Meeting with the flurry of excitement that are the many members of The Charles Géne Suite, one needs to be sharp to not get lost in the inside jokes being thrown around – it’s clear these guys spend a lot of time together,” Goethe-Institut’s Jonas Radunz said. “But after a few moments, you get a feeling of the deep commitment to artistic expression and the sheer joy of creating together.
“The project came out of regular jam sessions, with each member bringing the individual talents and styles to the table, which they usually portray in their side projects. The charming Rams, thoughtful Asi, witty Sam Turpin and pensive Laliboy are the main faces due to their roles as vocalists.”
“Equally important to the sound, but more in the background, are multi-instrumentalist Noah Bamberger, drummer Saul Nossel, pianist and producer Illa N and saxophonist Mo D. Their performance rounds up the first ever Library Jams season: full of soulful harmonies and vocals, they brought a beautiful energy to our Library and set the right tone for the many performances to come.”
